Playground Leaders
Playground Leaders is a scheme that trains year 4 pupils to become 'play leaders', helping to make their playgrounds safer, more active and more fun. The Play Leader Award Scheme is a structured programme of leadership training for Y4 pupils that supports them working with younger children, teaching them leadership skills through co-operative games.
The scheme responds to the needs of individual schools through an identified training programme that focuses on pupils and encourages them to take more responsibility for developing active, healthy playgrounds for all through collaborative play. The scheme focuses on the development of the whole child, promoting integration and co-operation amongst children of all ages and their adult counterparts.
Play leaders are then supported in the delivery of lunchtime sessions where they can practice the skills they have learnt in teaching younger pupils to co-operate with each other in a safe and caring environment. This support can be provided by the trainer; an identified member of staff and / or mid day assistants involved in the programme.
After training is delivered through the Partnership, the Playground Leaders, supervised by a lead member of staff , work in pairs or threes to organise fun games and equipment for the younger children in the school.
Benefits of the scheme include:
- Encourages pupils to take responsibility and develop leadership skills
- Develops skills of personal responsibility, self-organisation, confidence and self esteem alongside planning and self review
- Supports the work of the mid-day assistants
- Provids opportunities for older pupils to work with younger pupils thus promoting integration and social inclusion across the school community
- Reduces problems of bullying and inappropriate behaviour at lunchtimes
- Encourages co-operation and develops moral, social and psychological skills within the community.
